Cape Town Hiking for Beginners: Best Routes, Tips and What to Expect

Cape Town is one of the best hiking destinations in the world for beginners. The mountains are accessible, the trails are well-used, and the views from the top are extraordinary enough to feel like a genuine achievement. But "accessible" doesn't mean "easy" — and first-time hikers who underestimate Table Mountain or Lion's Head quickly discover that. This guide covers everything you need to know to plan your first hike in Cape Town safely and enjoyably.

The Best Hikes in Cape Town for Beginners

Platteklip Gorge — Table Mountain

The best first hike in Cape Town. Platteklip Gorge is the most popular route up Table Mountain for good reason: it's well-marked, clear to follow, and delivers you to one of the most iconic summit views in the world. It's steep — you'll climb continuously for 1.5 to 2 hours — but there's no scrambling and no route-finding. If you walk regularly and have decent fitness, you can do Platteklip.

Lion's Head Sunrise or Sunset Hike

The most popular hike in Cape Town and arguably the most scenic. Lion's Head involves a circular route around the peak with chain ladders and a fun scramble near the summit — which most beginners enjoy rather than find difficult. The views of Table Mountain, Camps Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean from the top are hard to match. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours for the full circuit. The sunrise and sunset experiences are particularly spectacular.

Skeleton Gorge — Kirstenbosch

If you want a more gradual, forested Table Mountain experience, Skeleton Gorge is excellent for beginners who prefer natural paths over rocky staircases. Starting inside the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, the route climbs through beautiful indigenous forest to the Back Table plateau. Note: the upper ravine section includes ladders and is a step up in difficulty, but most beginners manage it with a guide.

How to Prepare for Your First Cape Town Hike

Build your fitness in advance. Even "easy" hikes in Cape Town involve sustained uphill walking. In the weeks before your hike, practice walking on hills, climbing stairs, and building your cardio endurance. You'll enjoy the hike much more — and feel it much less — if you arrive prepared.

Wear the right shoes. This is the single most important gear decision. Do not hike in sandals, flat trainers, or new shoes. You need trail running shoes or hiking boots with good grip and enough ankle support for uneven rocky terrain. See our full guide on what to wear hiking in Cape Town.

Start early. On summer days, beginning your hike before 8 a.m. means cooler temperatures, fewer people on the trail, and better chances of clear summit views before the afternoon cloud rolls in.

Carry enough water. At least 1.5 litres per person. More in summer. Dehydration is a common cause of difficulty on Cape Town hikes, and there's no water available on most routes.

Check the weather. Don't hike in high wind or rain. Table Mountain creates its own weather and conditions can change fast. Check the forecast the morning of your hike and be prepared to postpone if conditions aren't right.

Should Beginners Hire a Guide for Cape Town Hikes?

If you've never hiked before and you're visiting Cape Town as a tourist, yes — a guide makes your first hike significantly safer, easier, and more enjoyable. Here's why:

Navigation: Even on Platteklip Gorge, first-timers regularly make wrong turns, especially on the descent. A guide means you never get lost.

Pacing: Experienced guides set the right pace for the group, which prevents burning out on the ascent and reduces the risk of injury.

Safety: Guides carry first aid equipment, monitor weather from before departure, and know what to do in any emergency.

Knowledge: The flora, geology, history, and ecology of Table Mountain is extraordinary — a guide turns a climb into an experience.
