Table Mountain is moderate in difficulty — most fit adults with no hiking experience can reach the summit on the right route. But "moderate" on Table Mountain means something specific: steep, sustained climbing on uneven rocky terrain, with weather that can change fast. This honest guide breaks down the difficulty of each route so you can choose the right one for your fitness and experience level.
How Difficult is Table Mountain to Hike?
The short answer: Table Mountain is not technically difficult, but it is physically demanding. There are no ropes or specialist climbing skills required on the popular routes. What you need is a reasonable level of fitness, proper footwear, and the ability to manage altitude gain — Platteklip Gorge starts at around 300m and reaches 1086m at the summit, a gain of nearly 800m.
Most healthy adults who walk regularly can complete Platteklip Gorge. People who do little physical activity will find it hard. The best preparation is to walk regularly on hills or stairs in the weeks before your hike.
Table Mountain Route Difficulty: A Honest Comparison
Platteklip Gorge — Moderate
The easiest and most direct route to the summit. Platteklip follows a well-paved stone staircase path up through a gorge on the front face of the mountain. The difficulty is in the sustained steepness — you climb nearly continuously for 1.5 to 2 hours with limited flat sections. There is no scrambling or route-finding. If you can manage a long, steep uphill walk, you can do Platteklip.
India Venster — Moderate to Challenging
Harder than Platteklip both physically and technically. India Venster involves open rock faces, some scrambling on hands and feet, and route-finding on sections that are not clearly marked. It takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours to the top and requires a good level of fitness. The rewards are proportional — less crowded, more scenic, and a greater sense of adventure. Best done with a guide.
Kloof Corner Ridge — Challenging
The most technically demanding of the popular routes. Kloof Corner involves exposed ridge walking, sustained scrambling on steep rock, and requires confidence on uneven terrain at height. Allow 3 to 4 hours to the top. Not recommended for people with a fear of heights or those new to hiking. Always do this route with a guide.
Skeleton Gorge — Moderate to Challenging
A longer, more forested route starting from Kirstenbosch. The difficulty ramps up in the upper gorge section, which involves ladders and a narrow ravine. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours. Less exposed than the front-face routes but demands good fitness for the final climb. One of the most beautiful routes on the mountain.
What Makes Table Mountain Hard?
The heat. Summer temperatures on the lower slopes can reach 30°C. You'll be climbing steeply in direct sun for most of the ascent. Start early — before 8 a.m. — and carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person.
The weather. The "tablecloth" cloud that forms over the summit on south-east wind days can reduce visibility to near zero on the upper sections. Conditions can go from sunshine to cold, wet, and windy within 30 minutes. This isn't a reason not to hike — it's a reason to prepare properly and check the forecast on the day.
The descent. Many hikers underestimate how hard the descent is on the knees. Platteklip's stone steps are steep going down, and the jarring impact accumulates over 1.5 hours. Trekking poles help significantly if you have them.
Who Should NOT Hike Table Mountain Without a Guide?
You should book a guide if you have no previous hiking experience, are hiking alone, don't know the mountain, or plan to do any route other than Platteklip Gorge. The mountain claims lives every year — not because it's extreme, but because people attempt it unprepared, get lost on the descent, or are caught in fast-moving weather. A guide eliminates these risks entirely.
