Table Mountain Hiking Guide: Routes, Times & What to Know

Table Mountain is one of the most famous hikes in the world, and one of the most accessible. On a clear day, you can reach the summit in under two hours — but the mountain demands respect regardless of the route you choose. This guide covers everything you need to know before you hike Table Mountain: the best routes, how long each one takes, what to bring, and why a guide makes the difference between a stressful day and an unforgettable one.

How Long Does it Take to Hike Table Mountain?

The time it takes to hike Table Mountain depends entirely on which route you choose and your level of fitness. Here's a realistic breakdown:

Platteklip Gorge: 1.5 to 2 hours up, 1 to 1.5 hours down. This is the most direct route to the summit and the most popular. It's a clearly marked, well-maintained path but it's steep — expect to work hard for the first 90 minutes.

India Venster: 2.5 to 3.5 hours up, 2 hours down. A longer, more scenic route through fynbos and rock slabs on the mountain's western face. Less crowded than Platteklip and more rewarding, but requires a higher level of fitness.

Skeleton Gorge (from Kirstenbosch): 2.5 to 3 hours up, 2 to 2.5 hours down. A beautiful forest and ravine route starting from the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden on the mountain's eastern flank.

Kloof Corner Ridge: 3 to 4 hours up, 2 hours down. The most technical of the popular routes. Involves scrambling and exposed sections. Best done with a guide.

Which Route is Best for First-Timers?

Platteklip Gorge is universally recommended as the best starting route for first-time Table Mountain hikers. It's well-marked, manageable in terms of navigation, and delivers you directly to the summit plateau with its extraordinary views. The path is busy — particularly on weekends and school holidays — but that's part of what makes it a safe choice for newcomers.

India Venster is an excellent step up for anyone who has done Platteklip and wants a more adventurous experience. The route is quieter and the scenery more varied — open fynbos, dramatic rock formations, and views across Camps Bay and the Atlantic. A guide is strongly recommended on India Venster, as the route is less clearly marked and involves some route-finding across open rock faces.

What to Bring on a Table Mountain Hike

Table Mountain's weather is famously unpredictable. The mountain creates its own microclimate, and conditions can shift from hot and sunny to cold, wet, and misty within an hour. Proper preparation is not optional — it's essential.

Always carry: a warm layer (a fleece or windproof jacket even in summer), a waterproof layer, at least 1.5 litres of water per person, sunscreen, a hat, and snacks for energy. Wear proper hiking shoes or trail runners — not sandals or flip-flops, which are unsuitable on Table Mountain's rocky paths.

Start early. Most experienced hikers begin before 8 a.m. to avoid the midday heat, the afternoon crowds, and the notorious "tablecloth" cloud that often rolls in from the south-east after midday in summer. Check the weather forecast before you leave and do not hike if the forecast shows strong wind or rain.

Is Table Mountain Safe to Hike Alone?

Table Mountain is safe — but it demands respect. Every year, Cape Town Mountain Rescue responds to dozens of incidents involving hikers who were unprepared for the terrain, the weather, or the navigation challenges. Most incidents are preventable.

Hiking with a professional guide eliminates the most common risks: getting lost, being caught in bad weather without the right gear, and attempting terrain that's beyond your experience level. Our guides know the mountain in all conditions, carry emergency equipment, and plan every hike around the group's fitness level and the forecast.
