Most people who visit Table Mountain see it from the cable car or the well-trodden paths of Platteklip Gorge. Tranquillity Cracks gives you a completely different version of the mountain — a narrow, technical route through rock fissures and scrambling sections on Table Mountain's front face that feels genuinely adventurous, with views that open dramatically as you climb through the cracks themselves.
It's one of the mountain's most distinctive routes: not a gorge, not a ridge, but a series of vertical cracks in the sandstone that you climb through, hands and feet, with the Atlantic spreading out below and Platteklip Gorge's crowds nowhere in sight.
What Is Tranquillity Cracks?
Tranquillity Cracks is a technical scrambling route on Table Mountain's north-facing front wall, to the west of Platteklip Gorge. The route follows a series of narrow rock chimneys and cracks through the cliff band below the summit plateau, requiring genuine scrambling — using both hands and feet — on well-featured sandstone. It's not a walk with a bit of scrambling; it's a scrambling route that feels like a short climb, and that's exactly what makes it special.
The route tops out on the Table Mountain plateau, from which you can walk to the cable car upper station or explore the summit. The descent is typically via cable car or one of the main hiking routes back down.
Difficulty
Tranquillity Cracks is significantly more demanding than Platteklip Gorge or the standard India Venster route. The scrambling sections are exposed, require both hands, and some moves feel more like rock climbing than hiking. The exposure (the sense of height above the ground) is real and uncompromising.
This is not a route for casual hikers or anyone with a fear of heights. It's best suited to:
- Hikers who are comfortable with hands-on scrambling
- People who've done Lion's Head chains and ladders and want more
- Active visitors looking for an adventure that feels genuinely different from a normal mountain walk
- Anyone who prefers technical challenge over straightforward ascent
On wet rock, the difficulty rating increases substantially. Tranquillity Cracks should not be attempted after rain or in mist.
Route Overview
The approach follows Platteklip Gorge trail initially before branching left (west) below the front wall. From the junction, the route climbs steadily to the base of the cracks, then ascends through a series of chimneys and narrowing slots in the sandstone. Handholds are good throughout, but the moves are committing — there are sections where the only way is up, with the exposure increasing behind you as you climb.
Total route time (approach + scrambles + summit): 3–4 hours to the top, plus time on the summit plateau.
Why Go With a Guide?
More than almost any other Table Mountain route, Tranquillity Cracks benefits from expert guidance:
- Route finding: The approach junction is easy to miss and there are false trails that lead into impasses. Guides who know the route don't waste time searching for the correct line.
- Move coaching: The technical moves in the cracks are easier when someone who knows them well shows you the sequences. "Left foot there, right hand here" transforms sections that look impossible into manageable moves.
- Safety: On exposed scrambling terrain, knowing where to put your hands and feet — and where NOT to — matters. Guides with first aid training and mountain experience provide a meaningful safety margin.
- Confidence: Many hikers who do Tranquillity Cracks for the first time say they'd have turned back without a guide. The moves feel more intimidating than they are; a guide's reassurance makes the difference.

- vs Platteklip Gorge: Physically comparable effort, but Tranquillity Cracks is more technical and far more adventurous. Better views, fewer people, hands-on throughout.
- vs India Venster: Tranquillity Cracks is harder and more exposed. India Venster's scrambling is briefer and the route more straightforward. Both are excellent; Tranquillity Cracks is for those who want more.
- vs Kloof Corner Ridge: Different character — Kloof Corner is an exposed ridge with sustained Atlantic views; Tranquillity Cracks is a technical face route through rock fissures. Both are in the top tier of Table Mountain experiences.
