Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about booking a guided hike in Cape Town with Ruminate — safety, weather, fitness, transport and more.
Are your guides qualified?
Yes. Every hike is led by an independent, registered Tourist Guide with current first-aid certification. We review each guide's credentials, registration and first aid before they list a hike on Ruminate, so you're always in safe, experienced hands.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Your safety comes first. Cape Town's mountain weather changes fast, so we monitor conditions closely. If a hike is unsafe, we reschedule it for the next suitable time — and if you can't make the new date, you get a full refund.
How do I book and pay?
You book and pay securely online in a couple of minutes — no back-and-forth or deposits-by-EFT. Choose your hike, date and guide, check out, and you'll get instant confirmation with all the meeting details.
What's your cancellation policy?
If we cancel for safety or weather, you can reschedule or take a full refund. For guest cancellations, please give us as much notice as possible — see our refund policy for the details.
What fitness level do I need?
We have hikes for every level, each rated Easy, Moderate, Challenging or Strenuous. If you're not sure which suits you, tell us your fitness and we'll match you to the right route and pace — there's no rush and no pressure.
I'm nervous about heights — can I still hike?
Absolutely. Just let us know when you book. We guide people of all comfort levels and can choose routes that are less exposed, and we'll support you through any trickier sections at your own pace.
Can kids and families join?
Yes, depending on the route and the children's fitness. Private family hikes are a great option and can be tailored around younger hikers — just ask and we'll recommend the best fit.
How big are the groups?
Small and personal. Group sizes are kept limited (typically up to around 10–12, depending on the trail) for safety and a better experience. Private hikes for just your group are available too.
Do you offer transport or pickup?
Yes — optional pickup and drop-off is available from most parts of Cape Town for an added fee. Add it when you book and we'll confirm the timing.
What time do sunrise hikes start?
It depends on the season, but sunrise hikes generally start very early (roughly 4:00–6:00 AM) to reach the summit for first light. We'll send you the exact meeting time when your booking is confirmed.
Are permits and cable car tickets included?
Guiding, safety and route planning are included. Some extras are for your own account — for example the Table Mountain Cableway ticket if you ride down, or entry to Kirstenbosch on certain routes. Where a hike needs a special permit, we handle the logistics and let you know any costs upfront.
Do you do multi-day or overnight hikes?
Yes — we offer a selection of multi-day and overnight adventures (think the Cederberg, Cape Point and Table Mountain overnighters). These involve more logistics and accommodation, so they're planned ahead and usually need a deposit. Message us and we'll recommend the best option for your dates and fitness.
Do you offer private or custom hikes?
Yes — private sunrise, sunset and fully customised hikes for couples, families, solo travellers, friend groups and corporate teams. We tailor the route, pace and timing to you.
