Questions people ask before booking

Which Table Mountain route should I choose?

If you have never done this before, book Platteklip Gorge. It is the most direct route to the summit, there is no scrambling and no exposure, and it takes two to three hours going up. If you want something more adventurous, the table below is the honest comparison. India Venster and Kloof Corner Ridge are not beginner routes and we will say so if you ask.

RouteTimeWhat it asks of youPer person
Platteklip Gorge2 to 3 hoursA steady staircase. No scrambling, no exposure. The beginner's route.R 875.00R 1,250.00
India Venster3 to 3.5 hoursScrambling, chains and real exposure. A head for heights is essential.R 875.00R 1,250.00
Kloof Corner Ridge3.5 to 5 hoursChallenging and exposed, with sustained scrambling. Quiet and spectacular.R 875.00R 1,250.00
Skeleton Gorge4 to 5 hoursLong and stepped, through forest and up ladders. Shade and streams.R 1,050.00R 1,500.00

Still not sure? Message us with your hiking background and who is coming, and we will point you at the right route rather than sell you the wrong one.

What is the best hike for me?

It comes down to three things. Fitness – Platteklip and Kasteelspoort are the kindest, Skeleton Gorge is the longest. Head for heights – India Venster and Kloof Corner Ridge have real exposure, the others do not. What you want out of it – the summit and the view (Platteklip), the famous photograph (Kasteelspoort and the Diving Board), shade and water (Skeleton Gorge), or quiet (Woody Ravine, Tranquillity Cracks). Tell us those three things on WhatsApp and we will answer in a sentence.

What is included, and what is not?

Included

  • Professional qualified hiking guide
  • Safety briefing before the hike
  • Mountain navigation and route guidance
  • Basic first aid kit and emergency assistance
  • Professional photos taken throughout, where possible
  • A small group, so nobody gets rushed

Not included

  • Table Mountain Aerial Cableway ticket for the descent
  • Food and drinks
  • Personal hiking gear and clothing
  • Travel insurance
  • Gratuities, entirely optional

Pick-up and drop-off from your accommodation is an optional extra at R 400.00 per group of up to four, per location. You can add it on any hike page.

Are your guides actually qualified?

Yes. Every hike is led by a CATHSSETA-certified mountain guide with First Aid Level 1 training, and our lead guide has 23 years on these mountains and more than 500 guided hikes behind him, with a 100% safety record. That is the part you are really paying for: someone who reads the weather before it turns, knows where the route goes when the cloud comes down, and can tell you about the geology, the fynbos and the history of the path you are standing on rather than just walking in front of you.

How do we get down from the summit?

Most groups ride the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway down, which gives you the aerial views as well as the hike. Cableway tickets are not included in our price and are bought at the upper cable station on the day. Walking down is always an option, and your guide comes with you either way.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Table Mountain makes its own weather and we will not take a group up in unsafe conditions. If we have to call it off, we move you to another date at no charge. If no other date works for your trip, you get a full refund. You are never left choosing between your safety and your money.

What time do the hikes start?

It depends on the season, because heat on an exposed trail is the main risk. Summer usually 06:00 to 06:30, autumn 06:45 to 07:30, winter 07:00 to 08:00, spring 06:30 to 07:30. Your exact meeting time and place are confirmed on WhatsApp before the day.

Can you collect us from our accommodation?

Yes. Pick-up and drop-off covers up to four guests from one location and can be added on any hike page. Send us your address on WhatsApp once you have booked and we will confirm the collection time.

What should I bring?

One and a half to two litres of water, a snack, active clothing, a warm layer for the summit, a hat and sunscreen, and trail or hiking shoes with proper grip. Navigation, first aid, the safety briefing and the photographs are on us.

Is it cheaper to book here than on a booking site?

Yes. This site is our own, the price you see here is our lowest, and your money goes to the guide who takes you up rather than to a middleman.
