Signal Hill sits directly above Cape Town's Green Point and De Waterkant neighbourhoods, rising to 350m at its highest point. Getting to Signal Hill
Signal Hill Road branches off from Kloof Nek Road, which connects the City Bowl to the Atlantic Seaboard. The drive up is itself scenic, with views across the harbour opening as you climb. There's a large free parking area near the top (the gun platform area) and further up at the trig beacon area.
If walking from the city, the most direct route is up from Green Point or via the path that starts from the car park at the bottom of Signal Hill Road, adjacent to the Bo-Kaap. Allow 45–60 minutes each way on foot from the city bowl.

The Trig Beacon Walk
From the upper parking area, a short path (15–20 minutes) leads to the trig beacon at 350m. The views at the top take in Table Bay, Robben Island, the harbour, the city centre, and on a clear day, the mountains of the West Coast. This is the easiest summit walk in Cape Town.
Signal Hill to Lion's Head (Saddle Route)
A path connects Signal Hill to the Lion's Head saddle — the low point between the two peaks. From the Signal Hill parking area to the Lion's Head saddle is about 45 minutes on a good path. From the saddle you can continue up Lion's Head via the standard circular route (chains, ladders, exposed scrambling). This makes Signal Hill a useful starting point for Lion's Head via a longer approach.
Kramat Walk
A gentle loop around the lower Signal Hill area passes the Kramat (shrine of Sheikh Nurul Mubeen), a significant site in Cape Town's Cape Malay heritage. This is an easy, flat walk of 1–2km that gives context to Cape Town's history as well as views across the Atlantic Seaboard.
Signal Hill at Sunset
Signal Hill is Cape Town's most accessible sunset viewpoint. The hill faces west, directly into the Atlantic sunset, and on clear evenings the light show from the parking area or the trig beacon is extraordinary — the sun drops into the ocean behind Robben Island and the sky turns from gold to red to purple over the Blouberg coastline to the north.
In summer, the parking area fills up from about 18:00 onwards with locals and visitors. Arriving by 17:30 gives you a good spot. In winter, sunset is earlier (around 18:00) and the parking area is quieter.
The Noon Gun
Signal Hill is also the location of Cape Town's famous Noon Gun — a cannon that has been fired at noon on weekdays since 1806 to allow ships in the harbour to set their chronometers. It's one of the world's last working time guns. If you're on the hill around midday, the gun fires from a platform near the lower Signal Hill parking area. It is significantly louder than you expect.
Signal Hill vs Lion's Head: Which to Choose?
Signal Hill and Lion's Head are often considered together because of their proximity. The key differences:
- Signal Hill is flat, easy, accessible by car, family-friendly, and perfect for sunsets without exertion.
- Lion's Head is a proper mountain hike — 2–3 hours, 400m of elevation gain, exposed scrambling sections. Far more physically demanding and dramatically rewarding.
For many visitors, Signal Hill at sunset followed by dinner on the Atlantic Seaboard is a perfect Cape Town evening. For active visitors who want the full mountain experience, Lion's Head at sunrise is the upgrade — and one of Cape Town's finest experiences.

- Signal Hill Road can get very busy at sunset in peak season — allow extra time to find parking or consider arriving 30–45 minutes before sunset
- The hill is exposed to wind, particularly when the south-easter is blowing — bring a layer even in summer
