The route
The trail starts on Signal Hill Road and spirals around the mountain on a well-worn path. The first section is a gentle gravel road with sweeping views of Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles. It then narrows into a steeper rocky footpath. Near the top you reach a fork: a set of chains and metal staples for those who enjoy a scramble, or an easier bypass path that avoids the most exposed moves. A final short climb brings you to the summit. Allow roughly 2 to 3 hours return depending on pace and stops.
Sunrise or sunset?
Sunrise rewards you with golden light, cool air and a peaceful, uncrowded summit, a perfect start to the day. Sunset gives you front-row seats as the city and sky turn orange and pink, with the lights coming on below as you descend. Both are spectacular; bring a headlamp for the dark portion of either.
Difficulty and who it suits
Lion's Head is rated moderate. The distance is short but there is steady elevation and some optional scrambling. It suits most fitness levels, including confident first-timers. If you are nervous about heights, the bypass route avoids the chains, and a guide can support you through the trickier sections.

Sturdy shoes or trail shoes with good grip, 1 to 2 litres of water, a warm layer for the summit breeze, a headlamp for sunrise or sunset, sunscreen and a hat. The trail is dry with no water sources along the way.

Lion's Head is hikeable year-round. Summer (December to February) offers long, warm evenings ideal for sunset; winter mornings are crisp and clear between fronts. Avoid very windy days, when the exposed summit becomes unpleasant and unsafe.
